A Word of Advice
I came across a post on a design blog that posed the question “If you were to do it all again, what would you do differently?” to a range of designers of note. Their answers made for fairly interesting reading.
It got me thinking — if I could go back in time and give myself some advice, what would it be? Not just in terms of design or work, but in general.
I had a long list of earnest advice here, but on re-reading I decided that a long, long list could be better summed up in four words.
Fifteen letters and a set of parentheses.
Live a little (more).
Play, planning, risks, stress, work, holidays, getting a haircut... I think those would be great words to live by. It's not a clear-cut mantra to live by, just a reminder to check priorities.
What about you? If you could go back and give yourself some advice, what would it be? Long or short, funny or poetic, I'd love to know what you'd say.

If I could go back in time, I would go to the beginning of this school year and tell myself not to sign on for Grade 12 Chemistry. What a huge pain it has been crawling through the mess that is this term's science! And on a more social note, I would definitely tell myself to enjoy the weekends and NOT take them for granted.

If I could go back in time, I'll never choose to do any engineering stuffs! My 9 years in it, I can only feels it gets more and more bored. And this discrimination in female! Any u-turn?

I would probably go back to year 12 and tell myself all about uni.
- Engineering really does suck
- Physics really is hard, but worth it
- Thankfully, no one actually cares about your TER
- Make friends with the lecturers
- Go talk to that boy in the transformers shirt

If I could go back in time, I would advise myself: Never take up a PhD! It's an illusion to think that if you were a procrastinator in your school and uni life, things will be different when taking up a PhD. Even getting paid for it doesn't help. Just makes you feel worse about it.

No one has invented a time machine yet

That's because the guy who did invent the time machine then went back and told himself not to.
